Maharashtra is a state in the western peninsular region of India occupying a substantial portion of the Deccan Plateau. Gateway of India Mumbai: The Gateway of India is an arch-monument built in the early twentieth century in the city of Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Ellora Caves: Ellora is also world famous for the largest single monolithic excavation in the world, the great Kailasa (Cave 16). Ellora represents the epitome of Indian rock-cut architecture. The 34 "caves" are actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills.
